Introduction to Digital Currencies

The course is designed to provide an introductory understanding of blockchain technology and decentralized digital currencies (cryptocurrencies) such as bitcoin. In particular, the course will survey the theory and principles by which cryptocurrencies operate, practical examples of basic cryptocurrency transactions and the likely interaction of blockchain technology with the banking, financial, legal and regulatory systems. The course concludes on how these concepts could be viewed within a framework of innovation and development. The primary aim is to provide a comprehensive introduction to the theory, principles, applications, and impact of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. It covers both the technical underpinnings and the socio-economic, financial, and regulatory implications of this deep tech domain.Delivered via distance learning, the course includes video lectures, reading materials, quizzes, discussion forums, and synchronous online sessions. Weekly quizzes provide formative feedback, while a final examination (50 multiple-choice questions) determines the final grade.
