Based in Alicante, Spain, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), an agency of the European Union and a Pledger of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology’s(EIT) Deep Tech Talent Initiative, is responsible for managing European Union (EU) trademarks, registered EU designs and EU geographical indications for craft and industrial products.
The EUIPO provides intellectual property (IP) protection across all EU Member States through a single registration system, and aims to harmonise IP practices, combat counterfeiting and raise awareness of intellectual property rights by collaborating with national offices and the EU Observatory on IP Infringements.
Why do we need to protect IP?
Intellectual property is a cornerstone of modern economies, powering innovation and growth. Across the EU, IP-intensive sectors play a vital role in economic development, supporting millions of jobs and driving exports. As global and technological shifts reshape our world, a robust IP framework is vital to remain competitive and foster sustainable growth.
The EUIPO’s Strategic Plan 2030 outlines a proactive approach to meet evolving demands. This includes adapting to global shifts, supporting green innovation and expanding digital and inclusive access to IP resources. By prioritising sustainability, inclusivity and technological advancement, the EUIPO aims to empower all innovators, helping them thrive in a rapidly changing global economy.
The Intensive IP Educational Programme
The EUIPO joined the EIT Deep Tech Talent Pledge to support the upskilling and upscaling of IP knowledge, and their ‘Intensive IP Educational Programme’ is designed to enhance IP literacy and practical application among university students and future business professionals. This programme aligns with the EIT’s mission to foster innovation and entrepreneurship across Europe.
The entire programme is offered free of charge, ensuring accessibility to a broad and diverse audience, and has two differentiated parts, which are:
- A series of real-time online sessions delivered by leading IP experts.
- A set of self-paced courses offering deeper insights into selected IP topics with a business-oriented approach.
More information about the course will be published on EUIPO’s Academy Learning Portal shortly.
