Call for Proposals on cloud, data and artificial intelligence

For our Pledgers and the Talents following the EIT Deep Tech Talent Initiative we would like to draw your attention to this funding opportunity.

The European Commission has a call for proposals on cloud, data and artificial intelligence (AI) with a total budget of 9.5 million EUR to support:

  • EU AI Innovation Accelerator
  • AI Regulatory Sandboxes
  • Pilot action for the establishment of future Union Testing Facilities in AI

The overall objective of this Call is to accelerate innovation and trustworthy AI by providing a range of services and tools to providers of AI systems, in particular to SMEs and national competent authorities to prepare for and facilitate compliance with the upcoming AI Act, the world’s first comprehensive regulatory framework for trustworthy AI.

The EU AI Innovation Accelerator Call is expected to provide, among others, materials and online training courses to enable easy implementation of the AI Act, such as summaries and training material of the AI Act. The focus of the Call are under-resourced companies, in particular SMEs and start-ups, and under-resourced public authorities that are working on high-risk AI services/products or general-purpose AI models as defined by the AI Act.

The AI Regulatory Sandboxes Call is expected to deliver a common platform for sharing information, including supplementary supporting services such as training for the national competent authorities establishing the sandboxes.

The activities within this Call will need to establish a close collaborative relationship with the AI Innovation Accelerator Call because of the many deliverables that are to be developed jointly as per their respective tasks outlined in the Call.

The focus of the Call are providers of AI systems, particularly start-ups and SMEs, national competent authorities and the European Data Protection Supervisor, and authorities supervising the protection of human rights to be associated in the sandboxes. Additional stakeholders include the AI Board and AI Scientific Panel, research and experimentation labs, various EU initiatives, national and European standardisation organisations, notified bodies, civil society organisations, and other sectoral sandboxes

The Pilot action for the establishment of future Union Testing Facilities in AI Call focuses on the needs of market surveillance authorities of Member States, the AI Office and the EU Commission. Its various activities have the sole objective of preparing the implementation of the concept of testing facility for AI and define the requirements for a full-scale operation of the testing facility, including:

  • Training materials
  • Conducting initial and further training courses
  • Organising workshops and other activities fostering collaboration and exchange of information between stakeholders in preparation of the implementation of the AI Act.
