Course Description

Purpose & aims
Chip-in is a practical, EU-centric introduction to creating value with semiconductors—whether the “chip” is your product or the quiet engine inside it. The course demystifies the semiconductor landscape and shows how founders, product leaders, engineers, and policymakers can turn deep-tech into deployable solutions aligned with European frameworks and markets.

Who it’s for
Interdisciplinary and ambitious learners: senior students and early-career professionals (engineering, design, business), intrapreneurs exploring spinoffs, and startup teams building hardware or chip-enabled services. No advanced chip-design background required.

What you’ll learn
• Read the semiconductor value chain and spot opportunity spaces (compute, power, sensing, photonics).
• Apply design thinking to chip-enabled services (from user needs to MVP and business model).
• Build “trustworthy by design” solutions: safety, privacy, and cybersecurity aligned with EU rules.
• Navigate IP strategy, supply-chain resilience, and EU go-to-market dynamics.
• Map the EU scaling pathway (Chips Act pilot lines, EIC Accelerator, STEP/sovereignty seal).

Syllabus (deep-tech focus)
1. Semiconductors: role in innovation, EU landscape & Chips Act.
2. Value creation playbook: sectors & business models.
3. Design thinking, design-for-values & safe/secure-by-design (CRA/GDPR mindset).
4. From design to build: pilot lines, fabs/OSAT collaboration, prototyping to production.
5. Risks & scalability: technology, supply chain, privacy/IP, design-win strategy, funding ladder.

How you’ll learn & be assessed
100% online, self-paced. Short videos, concise readings, interactive checklists, and EU-ready templates (FMEA-lite, CRA readiness, IP register, design-win pipeline). Light quizzes plus a capstone: a 2–3 page investor-style memo de-risking a chip-enabled product for an EU market.

Practical info
• Format: Fully online, asynchronous (no live webinars).
• Workload: ~25–35 learning hours across 5 modules.
• Language: English.
• Certificate: Digital certificate upon completion.
• Prerequisites: Curiosity; basic familiarity with tech or business concepts is helpful.
• Fees & dates: See “Course details” on the programme page.
