Course Description
This course aims to equip learners with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the future of sustainable circular material welding. As advanced materials and recycling technologies reshape the manufacturing landscape—particularly in the automotive and construction sectors—there is a pressing need for upskilling in sustainable welding methods. The course addresses this need by integrating cutting-edge deep-tech solutions such as AI-powered inspection, human-machine interaction, and automated welding systems.
Targeted at both new learners and seasoned professionals, the course is designed for students in higher education (EQF level 5–6), vocational education and training (VET), and industry workers seeking to upgrade their competencies. It also supports inclusivity by enabling upskilling opportunities for individuals with disabilities through the integration of assistive technologies.
Learners will develop critical skills in:
- Advanced material joining techniques for recycled and sustainable materials
- Deep-tech applications in welding (e.g., AI-based quality assurance, robotics)
- Environmental and safety assessments in material use
- Human-machine collaboration and inclusive practices
- Entrepreneurial thinking and innovation in welding processes
The course is structured into five key sections:
1. Advanced material joining/welding in a deep-tech enabled circular economy
2. Innovative deep-tech enabled welding methods such as GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding), SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), FCAW (Flux-Cored Arc Welding)
3. Human-machine interaction in welding through automation, assistive technologies and automated AI-powered quality assurance
4. Environmental assessment and hazardous impact reduction
5. Horizontal/cross-cutting component: Entrepreneurialism and innovation in circular material welding work-based learning and practice
Teaching is delivered through a blend of video-based lectures (100+ slides), booklets, demonstrative videos, and guided storyboards. Learners are assessed through a WebQuest activity and 50 multiple-choice questions. The course is modular and flexible, totalling approximately 60 learning hours.
The course will be delivered online allowing for self-paced learning while facilitating integration into institutional or workplace settings.
Whether you are entering the field or updating your skills for Industry 5.0, this course provides the tools and insights to engage in safer, smarter, and more sustainable welding practices.
